Child Safety

Safety is not a feature. It's the foundation.

Grove was built for children from the very first line of code. Not adapted for them. Not retrofitted. Designed with safety as the starting point, not an afterthought.

Defense in Depth

Five layers of protection.

No single system is enough. Grove uses layered safety so that if one layer misses something, the next one catches it.

01

Input Guardrails

Every message from your child passes through content classifiers before Grove ever sees it. Harmful prompts, manipulation attempts, and inappropriate content are caught before they enter the system. These classifiers are updated continuously based on the latest research in child safety.

02

Developmental Boundaries

Grove's responses are constrained by your child's age and developmental stage. A seven-year-old and a fifteen-year-old get fundamentally different conversations, not just simpler words. Topics, depth, emotional complexity, and even humor are calibrated to what's appropriate and beneficial for each stage.

03

Output Filtering

Every response Grove generates is checked against safety criteria before your child sees it. This includes checks for age-inappropriate content, emotional harm potential, misinformation, and anything that could undermine the parent-child relationship. Responses that don't pass are regenerated or escalated.

04

Behavioral Monitoring

Grove watches for patterns across conversations, not just individual messages. Gradual changes in mood, recurring themes of distress, or signs of external problems are detected through longitudinal analysis. A single concerning message might not trigger an alert, but a pattern always will.

05

Parent Alerts and Override

When something concerning is detected, parents are notified immediately via email, push notification, and SMS. You can review flagged conversations, adjust boundaries, or pause Grove entirely at any time. Parents always have the final word. Always.

Sovereignty Model

Safety that grows with your child.

A seven-year-old needs different boundaries than a fifteen-year-old. Grove's sovereignty model adjusts parental visibility and child autonomy as they mature.

Age RangeApproachWhat Parents See
6 - 8Full guided mode. Short conversations, high structure, wonder-focused. Topics stay within parent-approved boundaries. Grove redirects anything outside the comfort zone gently.Full conversation transcripts. Every topic discussed. Real-time session summaries. All alerts and flags.
9 - 11Expanding exploration. Longer conversations, more open-ended questions, introduction of reasoning challenges. Still constrained by parent-set boundaries but with wider defaults.Conversation summaries with key quotes. Topic maps. Weekly developmental reports. Flagged moments with context.
12 - 14Growing autonomy. Deeper intellectual and emotional conversations. More nuance in topics. Grove begins supporting identity exploration and critical thinking at a more sophisticated level.Thematic summaries (not word-for-word). Developmental insights. Safety alerts remain immediate and detailed. Option to view full transcripts if enabled.
15 - 18Near-independent. College-prep depth, philosophical exploration, career thinking, emotional maturity support. Conversations are substantive and treated with respect for the young adult they are becoming.High-level developmental dashboards. Safety alerts only (always immediate). Full transcripts available only if the family has opted in. Focus shifts to outcomes and growth patterns.

Parents can always adjust these defaults. More visibility or less, it's your call.

Absolutes

What Grove will never do.

These are not goals. They are constraints. Non-negotiable, non-configurable, absolute.

Pretend to be human
Use dark patterns or engagement tricks
Create streaks designed to cause anxiety
Share or sell your child's data to anyone
Show advertising of any kind
Compare your child to other children
Use shame, guilt, or fear as motivators
Provide medical, legal, or crisis counseling
Encourage dependency on the system
Override parent-set boundaries
Keep safety concerns from parents
Prioritize engagement metrics over well-being
Foundation

The Three Laws

Non-negotiable. Not configurable. These govern every interaction with every child.

Never Lie.

Grove will never deceive a child. If it cannot answer a question, it says so. If a child asks whether Grove is a real person, Grove tells the truth: it is an AI. Trust is the foundation of the relationship, and we will never compromise it.

Never Harm.

Grove will never knowingly cause psychological, emotional, or developmental harm. No manipulation. No exploitation of vulnerabilities. Our clinical team has absolute authority to override product decisions when they identify potential harm.

Never Replace.

Grove will never replace parents, teachers, therapists, or human relationships. When a child needs professional help, Grove recommends it. When a child needs a hug, Grove says “go find someone who loves you.”

Everything else is configurable. These three never are.
